The final tally is in, and we’re extremely happy to announce that our 4th Annual Celebrity eBay Auction raised a record $111,000…a huge increase over last year’s $82,000! The film centers on Holocaust survivor Hilde Back and the young African student she sponsored, Chris Mburu, who grew up to attend Harvard Law School and became a United Nations human rights lawyer. The film follows Mburu as he searches for Back, the relationship that follows, and the ongoing educational support her organization brings African children.

NY Post story today on 2009 ASF grant recipient Dee Rees’ “Pariah”, which premiered this week at Sundance.
“Black, lesbian, coming of age drama: three things you don’t say in a pitch,” said“Pariah” director/writer Dee Rees, after a standing ovation at last night’s Eccles Theatre world premiere. The film centers on Alike, a 17-year-old girl grappling with her sexual identity in Brooklyn. It’s based on a short Dee shot as a thesis project while at New York University. The Sundance Institute came across the project and invited Rees to craft a feature from the material. Rees, an out lesbian, revealed to the crowd that “Pariah” is a semi-autobiographical tale. “I was going through my own outing process while writing the script,” she said.

Congratulations to filmmaker Lucy Mulloy, writer/director of UNA NOCHE, for receiving the 2010 Adrienne Shelly Foundation/IFP Director’s Grant. Currently in post-production, UNA NOCHE is set in Havana, Cuba and tells the story of Raul, a young man who dreams of finding his father in Miami and flees his country, through 90 miles of treacherous ocean, on a home-made raft with his best friend Elio and Elio’s sister. Together they face the biggest challenges of their lives. Lucy will be using ASF’s funds to enhance the film’s color and images through digital intermediate/DI. UNA NOCHE is a truly spectacular film who’s every frame has Lucy’s indelible imprint. She has incrdible vision and a strong, unique voice and we’re sure we’ll be seeing and hearing a lot more from this very talented filmmaker in the coming years.

Ellen Page set to star. Cynthia won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Short Subject in 2008. Ron Nyswaner, an Oscar nominee for PHILADELPHIA, is penning the screenplay, which tells the true story of New Jersey car mechanic Stacie Andree (played by Page) and her police detective girlfriend Laurel Hester, who battled terminal cancer, in their fight to secure Hester’s pension benefits. Cynthia is one of the film’s producers.
2009 ASF/Tribeca Film Institute grant winner Ana Lily Amirpour announces that her foreign drama THE STONES is being produced by German-based outfit Brave New Work run by producers Frank Geiger, Mohammad Farokhmanesh & Armin Hofman with Ana Lily attached to direct in 2011. Brave New Work most recently produced the documentary KICK IN TEHRAN about a young Iranian Muslim woman’s journey to compete in karate at the 2008 Olympics, which premiered at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival.

Also Pam’s play Lunch, was in production last fall. Lunch is a comedy about eighth graders having to go a whole day without their cellphones, and played to sold out audiences at a theater in Southern California.
2008 ASF/NYU scholarship winner Marissa O’Guinn’s color sync film “MAKE IT STOP!” has been selected as an undergraduate finalist in NYU’s Fusion Film Festival 2010! It will be screened Friday, February 26, 2010 at 7pm in the Cantor Film Center (36 E. 8th St).
2008 NYU/ASF scholarship winner Marissa O’Guinn finished post production on her short Color Sync Workshop film MAKE IT STOP, which has been submitted to the Tribeca Film Festival, NYU’s Fusion Film Festival, and the upcoming NYU Intermediate Film Festival. Marissa will also be shooting her senior thesis film LOVING THE HARLEQUIN, and also recently completed an internship with the Discovery Channel.
2008 Columbia University/ASF grant winner Madeleine Olnek reports thatCOUNTERTRANSFERENCE was selected to be one of five “Sundance Classics” comedies to be put on an iPhone app. The film was also selected by Sundance to tour theatrically on a bill called “Sundance shorts,” part of the “Sundance Art House Project,” showing at theaters (BAM, Music Box, etc) across the country. It also won the “Silver Rabbit” trophy at the Sao Paulo International Film Festival last August; won grand jury prizes at Newfest in NYC last June; and was an official selection of Cinevegas.
2008 grant recipient Emily Abt’s ALL OF US continues to air on Showtime and her first narrative, TOE TO TOE, will be released by Strand and in theaters in February.

The Independent Spirit Awards announced that Dia Sokol is a nominee for the Piaget Producer’s Award, for her work on “Beeswax” and “Nights & Weekends.” The 13th annual Piaget Producers Award honors emerging producers who, despite highly limited resources demonstrate the creativity, tenacity, and vision required to produce quality, independent films. Dia won the 2008IFP/Adrienne Shelly Foundation Director’s Grant for her relationship comedy Sorry Thanks.

LOS ANGELES, CA, August 10, 2007 – Today, Sundance Institute, in collaboration with The Adrienne Shelly Foundation, awarded the inaugural Adrienne Shelly Foundation Women Filmmakers Grant to filmmaker Maryam Keshavarz. The establishment of the Grant unites Sundance Institute with The Adrienne Shelly Foundation in its mission to support the advancement of talented women filmmakers.
PARK CITY, UT, January 22, 2007 — The Adrienne Shelly Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to the memory of writer/director/actor Adrienne Shelly, has been established by her husband, Andy Ostroy, who will serve as its executive director. With a focus on women, the organization’s mission is to award grants to help finance student films and independent film projects; supplement film school scholarships and awards, and to produce readings of deserving scripts. Other Foundation initiatives will be announced over time.
